Specs for 12 box PC

Postby Plavok » 24 Jun 2014, 03:29

Hiya

Is anyone of you running 12 instances on one machine successfully? If so, would you be willing to share the specs of your setup?

I will need to replace my computer soon and would like to upgrade its capabilities.. ;-)

Thx,
Plavok

That would be a challenge to most pcs i suspect due to cpu cores and preferring one thread per toon to avoid excess lag. I only run with 6 and other stuff in background and works well.

however that said, for a single machine, you might want to consider SSD for your hard drive, 16GB of memory MINIMUM (preferably the fastest your MB can handle though standard will work) and for cpu a I-7 sandy bridge (ie Up to 8 physical cores/16 threads depending on model number) or a multi cpu motherboard.

forgot that the IVY-bridge is a 6 core (12 threads) so that would work as well.

i7-4930k 6-core on an X79 board, 32gb of RAM, GTX780. 12 threads is the key, I believe.

32 gigs is JUST enough. I can run 12 but it is maxing out my ram with little else running.

I run those specs, just make sure you have a raid 0 SSD setup or at least everything on an SSD.

Built in 2013, many of the parts have upgrades already, runs great, I'm happy and will probably put a graphics card with more memory before upgrading anything else.

mid tower case
x79 board
i7-3970 (3.5GHz)
water cooling
1050w Gold PSU
32GB RAM
GTX 780 (3GB)
Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) on it's own SSD
all things EQ2 on their own SSD
custom ISBoxer profiles to cut down graphics on all but the toon I'm looking at
only bottle neck I'm really seeing in "Open Hardware Monitor" is the vRAM maxing out
ran the water cooler as an intake rather than exhaust and saw better temps on the CPU
have three of the big fans, front (intake), side (intake), and top (exhaust)
had to drill new holes for water cooler's radiator screws on back of case
was the most fun build I've done

I think more than 32GB RAM will help load times, not much else, I see the vRAM being worked more than anything running 12.

i usually see eq2 using about 1.2-1.5 gb per toon, 2gb each should definitely be enough. If system is needing more than that, odds are it has too much memory holding standby files. (assuming you dont have a lot tied up for other things like servers)

try running rammap.exe (can be downloaded from microsoft) and tell it to empty standby list. faster than a reboot to maximize avail memory.
