Work around: Everquest 2 takes FOREVER to load.
Posted: 30 Nov 2016, 13:02
Everquest2.exe takes up to a COUPLE of minutes to load. With or without innerspace it doesn't matter.
Cause: When Everquest2.exe is loading, it tries to connect to lp.soe.com.
Yes, they are still trying to connect to soe.com. To make matters worse, when it fails to connect (because that doesn't exist anymore), it waits, then tries again. Guess what happens when that fails? It waits and tries again.... SIXTEEN TIMES, then finally gives up. This is why there are delays now in starting up sessions.
The fix: Daybreak Games updates whatever the hell it's trying to connect to, to a server that actually exists.
The failed attempt: Trying to use HOSTS file to just loop them back to yourself. The problem is it fails to connect, so it just waits and tries again.
The workaround: Give it what it wants... basically.
We have set up a route on ogregaming.com that will respond to this request appropriately. Now all we have to do, is tell our computer, instead of connecting to "lp.soe.com", hit ogregaming.com instead (technically we're using an IP address).
Disclaimer time!
Modifying your HOSTS file is generally not recommended. You can google for more information about why etc. I am not responsible for anything if you decide to modify it.
Having said that, we're changing a URL that doesn't exist at all. So on a safety level, this will have no impact.
Locate your HOSTS file. On a windows 7 default install it is here:
Edit this file with a basic text editor, such as "notepad". Try to avoid fancy editors that may add formatting such as Word.
At the bottom of the file, on a new line, add this in:
This says "any time lp.soe.com is found, use ip address 199.204.185.32 instead". The IP address is one from ogregaming.com.
Save the file and you're done!
Just want to give a special thanks to everyone involved to who make this possible!
